How to Get that ‘Management’ Job

'Meet you at the Top' is the motto of three Sarina Russo Job Access customers from Islington who have secured management positions at their new employers

Nurdin Hamza (Pictured)
Nurdin is a graduate of an innovative community cafe project and is now the Restaurant Manager at an East African restaurant in North London.

The cafe project gave Sarina Russo Job Access customers valuable skills in hospitality, customer service and management along with a Food Hygiene certificate.

During the 10-week course customers learnt marketing, advertising and budgeting skills, attended presentations by self employed caterers and were tutored in finance by the Citizens Advice Bureau and Big Seller Vendor.

Six out of the eight participants, including Nurdin, used these skills to get a job. Nurdin said the Sarina Russo Job Access cafe project taught him to talk to people and improve his confidence.

"The Food Hygiene Certificate helped me learn about working with food and the interview techniques given to me by Juliet Clark helped me get a management role," Nurdin said.

Anwar Batson
Anwar volunteered at British Heart Foundation in Cricklewood as part of his Community Task Force agreement. He admits he lacked direction in looking for work. Once he settled in at his placement he impressed his employer with his abilities and aptitude.

Within six weeks he was offered a full time paid position as the Stock Room Manager of the Cricklewood warehouse. Anwar was given the responsibility to advertise and recruit new staff to work in his team - what a first week!

"Sarina Russo Job Access encouraged me to find 'real' work. Getting a job with the organisation I was placed with was even better," Anwar said.

Bardhe Brovina
Bardhe just wanted someone to give her a chance and was determined to learn as many new skills at her volunteer placement with Sue Ryder Care. She developed a professional CV, undertook interview training and set challenging goals. Sarina Russo Job Access put her forward for a role as a Trainee Assistant Manager at Ladbrokes Betting Agency.

To boost her confidence her Recruitment Consultant Hariss Pervez prepared her for the interview and her Employment Adviser Rowan Schirmer organised the purchase of some professional business attire. Bardhe said the new clothes gave her extra confidence and helped her stand out from the other applicants.

Bardhe got the job and says her time at Sarina Russo Job Access was an important stepping stone to getting back into work.

"They believed in me and game me the confidence and the tools to believe in my own potential. I set challenging goals for myself and I have achieved success through hard work and preparation," Bardhe said.
